If You Could Learn to Do Anything, What Would it Be?

Take a moment and think about your life. Have you achieved everything you have hoped? I took some time today and asked some of my loved ones, “if you could learn to do anything, hobby or otherwise, what would it be?”

This question stemmed from pure curiosity as to what dreams my loved ones may have. One of the answers was learn a new language. I’m sure this would be the answer from many of you out there. Not only is it a valuable skill to have when applying for jobs and while traveling, but it will also unlock doors you may have never thought possible. You will be able to communicate with an entirely new audience. Foreign films will become enjoyable to you because you won’t have to waste your time reading subtitles. A vast new world of music will be able to speak to you in ways you had never expected. So many rewards come from dedicating a small amount of your time to learning this new language.

For many of you, I’m sure blogging was, at one point or another, a hobby you had wished you could learn. For me, it was a spur of the moment decision, but one I will never regret. It has allowed me to express my thoughts and find my voice. You all have encouraged me so greatly on this journey.

Though this question stemmed from curiosity, there was a specific reason I asked it. In this age of technology, many of us forget to dedicate time to those we love, away from distractions. At meals, many of us are constantly on our phones, sometimes to the point that not a single word is said. My goal in asking this question was to find a hobby that I could enjoy with my loved ones, something we could do together. It is very difficult to first find the bravery to try something new, but it is even harder to then attempt to develop a skill on your own. I would always rather struggle with someone else, and be able to laugh at the situation than be struggling in my own mind trying to figure out what is going wrong.

If you are wondering, the hobbies I would really love to learn are Photoshop, Calligraphy, and Crocheting. I will be attempting to learn calligraphy with my mom and Photoshop with my boyfriend, Prestin. I haven’t had the chance to ask my dad what he would love to learn to do, so I will update soon. As these skills progress, I will post updates on here for you all.

Now I ask you, dear followers, if you could learn to do anything, hobby or otherwise, what would it be?

There are a few things I’d like to learn. One being a language. I’m not sure which – perhaps French or Spanish – but that’s top of the list. The next, but not priority, to improve on my art skills. I always used to love art!

Wow! I love this ! I really do want to learn calligraphy with you !!!! I was just thinking about that in my car ride to work !!! You inspire me !!!!! Dinner at a table with family around it is also so simple and yet gratifying ! Just have a simple meal (definitely what is served in our home) and connect ! I wish it was something we had done more of as my children were growing up !!!!!

  3. I started learning French and even to get to an intermediate level and communicate with others was an amazing feeling. I’d love to get really good at guitar. You’re suggestion of photoshop would be nice as well.

Great question! Life is short. The list of things I want to do is longggg!

I find that it has become easier for me to try LOTs of smaller things in order to find something I can become passionate about.

In the last few years a few of the things I have tried dabbling in include: paddle boarding, kayaking, rock climbing, zip lining, calligraphy, wine-tasting, and more. I find, at this point in my life, I want “experiences” not things. I want to do so many things that I can claim I truly am a Jill of all things, master of one!

Perhaps that day will come when I will find something I am so passionate about (beyond my work) that I will stop dabbling in everything and focus on that passion without hesitation or reservation.

    Until then…on my list:
    Macrame (your mom laughs)
    Parasailing
Traveling and if find time to commit…learning the piano

    • I’m so glad you have been able to try so many different things! I have no doubt that you will be able to find the think that speaks to you most and brings you endless amounts of joy!

I would agree that experiences are much better than things. They last a lot longer and often bring a lot more happiness.

I think macrame is absolutely beautiful! It looks difficult to learn though, so I give you props! Parasailing is a ton of fun (even for someone who is terrified of heights). Piano really isn’t too hard to learn, you just have to sit down and start practicing!

I love your deep thoughts on this and I think we all need this kind of thinking done each day to help improve ourselves and give back to others. I would love to go out and help those who have lost someone and give them company and encouragement.

    • I think that is amazing! I lost my brother about five and a half years ago. Having someone there is an awesome thing. While We’re Waiting is actually a faith-based group to help parents who have lost a child. You could always look into that!

I’d like to figure out how to podcast or have a YouTube channel. I don’t know if I’d be any good at it, but I think it would be fun to devote time to talking with other people about interesting things in a different way.

Heh! My husband taught me how to use photoshop when we were dating yeears ago. He’d get so mad at me when I couldn’t follow his instructions that I gave up and learnt through video tutorials!

Just in case you are interested, recently I started using a programme called affinity. It is like photoshop, but waaay cheaper, and really, really good. I am still learning, but there are lots of videos to show me how. πŸ™‚ Maybe it’d be useful for you too.
